The Bleak Reality of Overseas Filipino Workers

According to a recent survey, there were around 2.2 million overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who worked abroad in 2012. You can imagine how those numbers may have changed and grown over the past few years.

It is a grim reminder of the sacrifices that countless ordinary Filipinos who need to work abroad endure just to survive and support their families.

Clearly, OFWs carry the hope in their hearts and minds that someday, all of their hard work and suffering will pay off in the not so distant future.

However, the reality is only two out of five OFWs are able to set aside their well-deserved income as their savings, according to a study conducted by the NSO in 2013. That is why it is essential for them to work even harder so they will be able to send money to the Philippines.

There are many reasons why OFWs decide to leave their family and loved ones behind. They want to buy a house, a car, be able to travel to different locations, enjoy the latest electronic gadgets, support their children’s education, and save money to have their own business in the future.

But the harsh reality for 60% of OFWs is they are still struggling to make ends meet no matter how hard they work or how long they stay overseas. This distressing predicament may be due to a number of reasons.

It is quite possible that they are still paying off their debts. It is no secret that OFWs sell their meager belongings or borrow money so that they can have sufficient budget for placement fees, passport processing, among others.

I humbly suggest to our noble OFWs to curb their expenses because some of them might be spending their hard-earned money on vices like excessive drinking, gambling or maybe buying luxurious items which are not really necessary.

OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) and Money

Thousands of Filipinos are working abroad and we all know the main reason. It is not just the money that we want but it’s a lot of money that we need. Each Filipinos working abroad has different story to tell. Some are happy because of the benefits and satisfaction they got from their employer but the others are desperately being underestimated. They just help themselves to take all kinds of pain just to send money to the Philippines.

People dedicate many things to consider OFWs as our heroes.  Different awards are given to honor outstanding Overseas Filipino Workers. Some wrote articles to popular newspapers and magazines. Well, considering these things to appreciate our beloved OFWs are not enough. So, different renowned producers of the Philippine movie industry created movies that touched the heart and lives of Filipinos.

There are so many movies to consider relating to few OFW stories but this movie contains true to life scenes that can awake us to realizations and gave us the heartwarming feeling of unconditional love given by a mother to her children.

The “Anak” movie, starring Ms. Vilma Santos and Ms. Claudine Barretto, is about a mother who sacrificed herself to leave her family to work as a domestic helper in Hong Kong. When Josie (Vilma) had the chance to take a vacation, she unexpectedly astonished by the attitude and wrongdoings of her daughter. Carla (Claudine) got addicted to drugs. She even undergone abortion because of her sexual rebellious acts.

Here is the most memorable lines stated by Josie (Vilma) that made many Filipino cry:
(Translation) “I hope, every time you drink your beer while puffing your smoke… while you’re squandering all the money I sent you! I hope you would realize how much food I endured not to eat so that I could just send you a big amount of money! I hope while you’re lying there in your bed, sleeping… you would realize how much I endured all those years sleeping alone while I yearn for the embrace of the persons I love! I hope you would realize even just a little, how painful it is for me to take care of kids not even my own… while I cannot take care of my own children.”

At the end, we can say that no mistake can take away the love of mother to her children. And as a son or daughter to our parents, we should understand them wholeheartedly. Being an OFW is not a joke to work far from your own family.
